Skin Inc Magazine Interviews Valentina Chistova

by Valentina Chistova September 08, 2009 15:54

I want to thank Skin Inc Magazine for their beautiful article that was published in June.  I had the wonderful opportunity to speak with one of their talented writers, Abby Penning, during an interview which focused on my skin care background and expertise in aesthetics.  This is the second time Skin Inc interviewed me for a feature article and I want to thank them for their professionalism.

Skin care, eyebrow shaping and waxing are my biggest passions in this industry, and it’s been over 20 years already that I have had the pleasure of working in the spa business.   I enjoy starting every day reading emails from people all over the country, people who have questions about skin care, anti-aging, acne, eyebrow shaping and more.  I love reading your emails and I love having the ability to offer my knowledge to you via the Internet.  I have also had the pleasure of meeting some wonderful people who visit my spa, Aquamedica Salon and Day Spa in Long Branch, NJ.

If you have a moment, I hope you will read the article that was published in the Skin Inc Magazine June issue.  It will give you a closer look at my background, how I got started and who were my greatest influencers.

The article is online at:

Thank you again for allowing me into your lives and entrusting me with your questions regarding health and beauty!

Sincerely ~

Revitalizing Sea Salt and Rosemary Oil Body Scrub

by Valentina Chistova August 09, 2009 14:22

Question: I love going to the spa and getting pampered and getting treatments, especially body scrubs.  Do you have any simple recipes for making body scrubs with easy to find ingredients that I can make at home?

Valentina: Here is a recipe you can easily make at home.

Revitalizing Sea Salt and Rosemary Oil Body Scrub

Ideal for dry and flaky skin, this scrub is both easy and fun to apply, especially if you do it with a partner and focus on each other’s back.  Sea salt exfoliates the skin’s surface and rids it of dead cells, the tonic and invigorating effects of rosemary will increase blood flow. Rosemary revives, clears the mind and is commonly used in inhalations for nasal congestions.

Recipe:

½ cup coarse sea salt

¼ cup rosemary oil

body-scrub tool (such as a loofah)

Dip the body- scrub tool in a bit of oil, the dip in the coarse salt.  Rub over the skin in a circular motion, paying attention to rough spots like the knees, elbows and feels.  Rinse off with warm water, pat dry and moisturize.

Ask NJ Wax Expert. Can Men Wax Their Facial Hair?

by Valentina Chistova August 03, 2009 11:59

Question: My husband is looking for relief from his regular shaving routing.  He shaves in the morning and it’s back again at night.  Could he wax his facial hair so he doesn’t have to shave so much?

Valentina:  I never recommend for men to wax their facial hair.  First, the hair on men’s faces is much more coarse and thick than body hair.  This makes it more difficult to remove.  Second, the skin on the face is sensitive.  These two combinations can make for some disastrous results if a man waxes his face.

I can sympathize with your husband not wanting to have to shave so often.  My preferred method of hair removal for a man’s face is laser.  Although it is costly, results are excellent.

Laser hair removal uses laser light to pass a light beam through the skin. The laser targets dark pigment, called melanin, in hair. When the light beam hits the hair follicle it is destroyed instantly from the intense heat.  Patients usually report a slight stinging sensation when the laser is activated.

In most cases, laser hair removal slows hair regrowth, which could be excellent for your husband.  Several treatments can nearly remove all of the hair for a very long period of time.

Acne on The Chin, Why Teens Experience this Problem. NJ Skin Care Expert Talks

by Valentina Chistova August 03, 2009 10:01

Question: Hi Valentina - why does my teenage son only get bad acne around his chin and lower cheeks?  The rest of his face seems fine.

Valentina: This is very common for teens. Acne around the chin is usually from overactive hormones, something all teens most likely will experience.  The overactive hormones produce extra sebum (oil) around the chin and lower jaw line which tends to cause higher levels of acne there.

Your teen should be on a good skin care regimen.  He should wash his face twice a day and follow that up with a toner and acne treatment for affected areas.  If areas of his face are dry he should use a gentle moisturizer for those areas.  Use an acne fighting exfoliator at least once a week as well.

It is a good idea to begin him on a monthly teen facial routine.  The facial will help extract any impurities that are trapped beneath the skin’s surface.  Removing them during a facial will often prevent them from forming whiteheads later on.  Our Valentina's teen facial is formulated specifically for the problems of teen skin, we use all natural, anti-oxidant products.

It is important to regularly clean cell phones as well.  Cell phones are notoriously dirty and full of bacteria.  We often press them up against our cheeks when we talk which can cause breakouts.  Also try to keep his hands away from his face.  When oils from our fingers are transposed onto our skin, breakouts are likely.

If his skin does not respond to over the counter medicine, a dermatologist can recommend a prescription to treat his acne.

NJ Skin Care Expert On Teen Acne and Junk Food

by Valentina Chistova July 29, 2009 14:25

Valentina:

I receive so many emails from parents worrying about their teen’s acne.  Many of the questions center around eating junk food, pizza and chocolate.  Since so many parents have written in with similar questions, I decided to address them all in this blog.

Does eating junk food really cause teen acne?  The answer is NO.  While there are many other good reasons to cross junk food off your teen’s menu, it is not scientifically proven to cause acne.  However, if you notice that your teen tends to break out after a particularly greasy meal, or after a large dose of chocolate, perhaps its best to avoid those foods.

While there is no hard evidence that links junk food with teen acne, we do know for a fact that there are many foods that can help us maintain a beautiful complexion.  Foods rich in antioxidants like strawberries, blueberries and red peppers as well as foods that contain high amounts of Omega 3 fatty acids like Salmon have been known to be very beneficial for our complexion.   Vitamin E, B complex  and Vitamin D are also excellent for our skin.  Drinking lots of water also helps flush toxins from our body.

So, if your teen is being troubled by acne, the best thing to do is consult a professional who can diagnose and treat your teen’s particular skin type.  Talk to your family doctor about adopting a balanced diet of protein, vegetables and complex carbohydrates (brown rice, whole wheat bread, etc).  Bring your child to experienced aesthetician for a consultation and deep cleansing facial .

She deserves to be nominated as an Aesthetician of the Year...by B.S.

Valentina is extremely professional and gracious. Facial with Valentina is a pleasant experience. My face never looked so good. I am having treatments every month and plan to continue to do so. Valentina was able to improve my very dry skin. I feel very confident that she deserves to be nominated as an Aesthetician of the Year. I used to go to NYC for my skin needs all the time, but now I found professional in my area that I am happy with. Thank you

NJ Skin Care Expert Picks Top Anti-Aging Facials Including Chemical Facial Peels

by Valentina Chistova July 27, 2009 13:09

Question:  Hello  Valentina- what is the best anti-aging treatment?  I’m in my mid-30’s.  I have a few small lines and wrinkles, mainly from the sun.  I want to start treating and preventing any more from forming!  Which treatments do you recommend? I heard chemical peels are good?

Valentina:  Chemical peels are an excellent way to treat and combat the signs of aging.  However, like T-Shirts, there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to skin care.  While chemical peels are wonderful, you really need to have your skin analyzed to see which approach will yield the best results for you.

Here are some answers to commonly asked questions regarding Chemical Facial Peels.  I am not addressing questions of deep chemical peels since those are performed only by doctors and plastic surgeons.  I hope this helps. And remember, make a consultation to have your skin analyzed before booking an appointment for a Chemical Facial Peel.  You want to make sure you are choosing the treatment that is best for your skin.

What is a Chemical Peel?

Typically used on the face, a chemical peel uses an acid solution to remove damaged outer layers of the skin.  A chemical peel can smooth skin texture and is great for treating blemishes, reducing wrinkles and uneven skin pigmentation.

Are Chemical Peels Dangerous?

If performed correctly by a trained professional, the risk of injury from a chemical peel is low. However, you should always be aware that there could be negative side effects from any advanced skin care treatment like a chemical peel.    These risks include scarring, infection, swelling, changes in skin tone, and cold sore outbreaks.  This is why it is so critical to have a comprehensive consultation with the professional who is performing your chemical facial peel.    You will be asked about any medications you are on, medical history and exposure to the sun.

Can anyone get a chemical facial peel?

Most people with acne, uneven pigments or wrinkles can get chemical peels.  There are different types of chemical peels, so you should inquire about which peel would help the specific condition you are looking to treat.  If you have been taking Acutane, you may have to wait before getting your peel.  If your skin has a tendency to keloid, another treatment may be suggested for you.  A professional consultation will help determine which peel is best for you.

Do Chemical Peels hurt?

Depending on how strong of a peel you get, you can expect a burning and tingling sensation during the peel while the solution is on your face.  Remember, a deep chemical facial peel is a different story.  I am speaking of lower grade peels that can be performed in a spa by a trained professional.

I hope this helps answer some questions you may have had.  If you have further questions, email me at info@dayspaexpert.com .

How to Plan a NJ Spa Party Bridal Shower

by Valentina Chistova July 19, 2009 14:48

Question: Val- My company has hosted spa parties at your spa before and it was great! If I wanted to host a bridal shower spa party, what type of services and activities would you recommend? The spa party would be for about 8 girls. Your help is greatly appreciated!

Valentina: Planning a spa party for a bridal shower is a great idea! What woman doesn’t love to be showered with gifts, beauty and relaxation? We have hosted many successful bridal spa parties at our NJ Day Spa as well as other large group spa parties. Our Dream Room is the perfect area for setting up food and refreshments for your party and can also be used as a gathering room for opening presents. The Dream Room is filled with over-sized lounge chairs, perfect for relaxing on in-between treatments or before and after your party. Spa parties usually begin with some bonding time in the Dream Room.

After you all change into your spa robes and slippers, you can gather in the Dream Room for a quick bite to eat or to just relax together before the fun begins. We have a full menu of services to choose from. You can customize your experience with ½ hour or 1 hour massages and facials, manicures, pedicures, hair services and more. Typically the most popular services for spa parties tend to be massages, facials, manicures and pedicures.

After some time in the Dream Room, each member of your party will be escorted to begin their first selected service. Some of you may go for a manicure or pedicure, while others may begin with a massage or facial. In between services, the Dream Room is always available for your use. After you all have completed your services, you can choose to open presents together or just sit back, relax and enjoy the moment! Remember, any party can be customized to work with your requests. Fun spa parties in the past have included psychic card readings and professional photography. You tell us what you want and we will make it happen! Because we have catered so many successful spa parties before, we would be happy to help you plan and reserve the appointments for your event.

We do recommend you book your party 4-6 weeks in advance so we can accommodate all of your guests appropriately. To see sample packages from our group spa party menu, visit http://www.aquamedicaspa.com/corporate_spa.shtml The best thing to do is to call Aquamedica Spa at 732-222-8611 and ask to speak to me or my son Anatoliy. We hope to hear from you soon!
